When to Get Your Child a Cell Phone
Security and cost are two issues to consider when making the decision.
Cell phone companies are promoting new products to children (and their parents). Is your child ready for the responsibility of a cell phone?
Issues Parents Should Consider The pros and cons of security
  • On the positive side, some kiddie cell phones have parental controls. For example, the Firefly cell phone requires a parent to use a PIN number to enter the phone numbers that the child will be able call.
  • The Wherifone uses a GPS device to track the whereabouts of a child carrying the phone.
  • Camera phones can provide a certain measure of security. There have been cases where children have scared away potential abductors by trying to photograph them.
  • On the negative side, older teens often have Web-enabled cell phones, giving them access to the Internet when parents can't monitor their activity.
Cost If you think your child can handle the responsibility of staying within a plan, here's what you need to know before choosing one:
  • When phones are Web-enabled, parents are often surprised by the size of the phone bill. Customers can choose to go without this feature, but increasingly Web-browsing and text messaging capabilities are bundled with extra weekend and night minutes.
  • If a phone is Web-enabled, kids have access to games. Cell phone gaming is the newest market for companies and is expected to be big business in the next few years. Keep in mind, too, that there is a billion-dollar cell phone pornography business in Europe and Asia, which is expected to hit the U.S. market soon.
  • According to the market analysis company, The Yankee Group, the biggest trend among teen cell phone users is pre-paid SIM (subscriber identity module) cards/family plan hybrids.
Kiddie Cell Phone Companies Currently available are the Firefly and Wherify Wireless's Wherifone.
The Firefly offers:
  • "Mom" and "Dad" speed-dial keys
  • A parent-programmed, PIN-protected phone list
  • A 911 button for emergency calls
  • Coverage is available in certain parts of the country only
The Wherifone comes with:
  • A Global Positioning System to track the position of your child 24/7
  • An "SOS" button
  • Five preprogrammable dialing buttons so that parents can control costs
Other kiddie cell phones include:
  • The Verizon Migo, which has a simple keypad and a compact design for small hands
  • The TicTalk, which comes with five Leapfrog learning games
The Issue of Marketing to Kids In July of 2005, Commercial Alert, a group associated with Ralph Nader, asked Congress to start regulating the marketing of cell phones to children. Co-founder Gary Ruskin describes Commercial Alert as "a non-profit formed to protect children and communities from commercialization."
Commercial Alert is concerned that:
  • Kiddie cell phones will enable child predators to contact children without their parents' knowledge
  • Parents will not be able to control the bills incurred by their children
  • The issue of whether brain and ear tumors are caused by cell phones is still unresolved
  • Children will be targeted by advertisers through text messaging, "adver-games" and the usual TV, radio and print advertising
"We do a lot of work trying to stop marketing to children in schools," says Ruskin. "We've been watching as the cell phone industry has targeted our nation's kids. They obviously see our kids as their next cash cow."
Some Hard Numbers Susan Beacham, CEO and co-founder of Money Savvy Generation, researched some of the kiddie phones. "When you sign up for TicTalk," she notes, "you have to buy 100 minutes of air time for $25. That's 25 cents a minute." The actual price of the phone is another factor to keep in mind. "The TicTalk is $99," says Beacham.
Beacham suggests, "It's cheaper to just add a line to your own cell phone plan. It doesn't have parental controls on it, but it does through your own parental control when you get the bill. On the days when your child went nuts, she's either grounded or her allowance is garnished. And, by the way, since you're talking to someone who tries to empower kids with how to manage their own money, these kids should be paying for this with their own money. Now a 6-year-old is not going to be able to pay for this and that's why I'm so against it. Because it is an adult expense. It's an expense that a 13-year-old should be taking out of their allowance."
Child Psychology Eileen Gallo, a psychotherapist specializing in issues of family and money, believes parents are buying their children cell phones for the sense of security it brings. "A lot of parents are willing to pay for the peace of mind," she says. "How far they want to go is really up to them. I think there has to be limits though and it's up to the parents to set the limits. They could do a pre-paid cell phone plan. They could have limits on the number of minutes the child can talk."
Gallo illustrates with an example: "I have a friend whose daughter has a cell phone. She and her boyfriend were text-messaging and the bill was $700. The girl's parents were aghast. They created all kinds of jobs for her so she could pay it off. It took her a long time to pay it off. And they disabled the text-messaging options. So that's where the limits come in. Parents need to educate themselves and sit down with the child. They need to say, 'This is for you and the primary reason is to stay in touch, for our peace of mind as parents. This is the way it should be used.' "
A Helpful Suggestion One way to test if a younger child is responsible enough to have a cell phone is to give her a toy cell phone to carry around for one semester. If she doesn't lose the toy phone, she's ready to keep track of a real cell phone.

My parents don't give a crap what I do on my fone, I go on myspace on it, text, call whoever and whenever I please! I have to keep up ! ! with the stuff at skool. my whole skool is a text-a-holic so if you dont have a fone your an effin loser! becuz that means you have no life! whatcha gonna do call on the house fone? "Well I am a 12 year old girl and what I think is that if the child does not get into serious trouble and does fine in school why not. Last year when I turned 11 my parents let me go to places like the mall and the state fair by my self,so of corse I ran into times when I did not have a cell phone to cantact my parents. You can guess that did not help the situation at all. So If you find that your kid is responsible and can venture to places by themselves I would say that they should have to have there own cell phone.12-13 is the perfect age to get a cell phone, perferably a pay as you go. You as a parent can get the first card of a higher amount and then after that Your child should pay for the continous amounts. But when you do buy the phone dont get the cheepy, get the phone kids would be excited about. But make sure you lay ground rules like, they should not go on the internet, or buy ringtones and backrounds without your permision.Let them talk to thier friends on it and no! t just for emergincies, because they might end up getting board with it,but always know who they will be calling on it. So if your kid is about 12 let them have that cell phone you will see that it will help in the long run."

"I just turned 13, and I am just now getting an LG Shine(My first phone). I dont think anyone under 13 should get one. Im going into 8th grade this year. Yeah, sure, 7th grade is a good level to get your child a cell phone, but 8th Grade is more appropriate. You go out more, hang out more, you get a girlfriend/boyfriend, etc. I think the only reason a child under 13 should get one, is for after school parent pickup or after school projects. Other than that, I dont believe a child under 13 would have the responsibility to have a cell phone. Like I said, I just turned 13, and I am maturing now, so I am able to get one. To 11/20/07, YOU'RE ONLY 10!!!!!!!!!!!!! You arent's acting at ALL mature with your whiney crap, SO GIVE IT UP!!!!!"

"I got a phone when I was 10, and 1 year later it dropped in a puddle and broke. I had the same phone til i turned 12, then it broke. I got my 3rd phone (this had been the EXACT same modle the whole time), which was stolen about 6 months later. I have a new phone i have had for 2 or three months, and it is wonderful! it is different then the phone I had for the past 2 3/4 years. I have done many after school acctivities, and getting a phone for kids ages 9 and older is a great idea!!!"
03/24/2008:
"well i am 13 years old and when i was 6 years old my parents got me a toy cellphone to see if i was responsible enough to get one later and when i was 7 thru 8 years old i would get to carry one of my parents phones for half of the day then finally when i was 9 the got me a basic phone with a 2 year plan.. so i think it is a good idea for kids to have cellphones but for parents to make sure they are responsible first and to not go all out with their child's first cell phone .. also if they want a new phone before their contract is renewable they should save up for their own phone and it is also easier to wait the 2 years because you can get many phones for less than $100 dollars also for kids 12 years old and older unlimited texting will come out cheaper than limited or pay-per-text because it is $20 or less per month which the child can pay... ohh and also a terrific idea would be to insure the phone which is only 5 dollars a month per phone and when a phone breaks you wil! l get the same phone for a way lower price than to get a new one.. i just threw these ideas at you because i am a child who has had a phone since i was 9 years old and i got texting when i turned 11 and i am in the school honor roll, also i take my cell phone to school and it doesnt affect my studies at all.."

"i am 14 and i really don't see the need for cell phones for 11 year olds. when i istarted middle my parents got me a simple black and white nokia because i had to wait for my mom. then my parents got divoced and they disconnected my phone but seiously if kids are constanly monitored there's no need for cell phone's unless they go out alot that way they can keep track and to 11/20/07 by the way you act you are waaaay to imature for a phone and dude, whats with the cursing? ur 10 where did u learn ho to speak such vulgarity's?"

"What is the purpose of a cell phone to a young child, under 12. i think parents should be able to answer some of the basic questions before purchasng a cell phone for a young child. Is a child responsible for things around her or him. Does he or she independently care for her room, clothings, and school work. Does he or she helps around the house as a member of the family. I thinks if parents say yes to most of these questions, then they may considered a cell phone for a child under 12. "

"I'm going to be 14 in 2 months, and I just got my first cell phone. My parents gave it to me as a reward for going to a college course over the summer, and also as a bribe telling me to keep in touch the entire 3 weeks I was gone. The phone was a reward for doing so well, and I was warned before-hand that it would be taken away if my grades fell or I misbehaived. The phone has 250 minutes per month, plus unlimited texting. I have never gone over my minutes, and my parents are proud. I've had it taken away once, but other than that I've behaived well. My parents eased up on letting me go places with my friends, and they know I can take a picture of someone trying to hurt me with my camera if I get into trouble. Overall, the phone has given me a lot more freedom, and I'm enjoying it. It's a great investment; If your child(ren) can handle it."

"I purchased my 6 year old granddaughter a Firefly phone for her with a smaller monthly minute plan than I would have. Her parents were always on the telephone or PC whick is dial up, so she never got to call and talk to me nor could I get through to her for a talk or to see if I was supposed to pick her up or get and answer from her mother like if she could spend the night with us the coming weekend. I paid the bill, I programmed it and put my home/no., Melly's cell no., PaPa's name/no., her mom's cell no., her step dad's cell no., her own home phone no., her other grandpas home and cell no., and her long distant step grandmother's home and cell no., a her great grandfather's cell no., along with a few of her friend's home phone numbers. There are all entered in by me, with a secret code that only I know so that no one else can enter another number into it or take one out. Realize now that the phone itself has NO NUMBERS on it. Only an addrss book button for her to scrol! l through to find the person she'd like to talk to. With her being an exceptionally bright little girl, I only told her once and she remembered what I said, 'Guess what sweetheart? It just so happens that since Melly got you a Cingular (now ATT) phone, anyone else that has a Cingular phone, you get to talk to them for as long as ou want to and not use any of your minutes and your are so lucky because all of the cell phone numbers I put in her for you are Cingular numbers. (What luck for us!) You only have 200 minutes to use each month talking to anyone I put in her that does not have a cell phone and you will use some of your minutes talking with them, and any left over minutes will rollover into the next month and you'll have more than 200, you might have 300 minutes to talk with. Also understand that this Firefly phone is so ideal for someone her age that it will only RECEIVE calls from the phone numbers I entered into it, so NO predator or even a wrong number will rin! g her phone, just the preset ones input by me. She is so smar! t and of course the Firefly has caller ID that just shows Melly's cell or Melly's home, that if I called her from my home, she'd answer and say 'Melly, I see you're on your home phone and you're using up my minutes so call me back from your cell, Bye.' She's brilliant! I would ask her if she talked with her friends sometimes and she said she didn't want to waste her minutes. What a shocker!!! She told me she saw her mother with her phone trying to decode it or change something and she got so mad at not being able to figure it out, she threw it across the floor. Of course I did NOT send the instructions for entering into the code area and it would have taken her billions of attempts to try to decipher the code I entered, but I did not have a problem if the mother wanted to use it to call her step mother long distance cell, it was free, or her husbanc's cell, it was free. The mother was just so disgusted that she couldn't figure out how to change that little phone I bought that the ! phone was never seen again. My granddaughter says she thinks mommy threw it away. How sad is that? When I called Cingular to say it was lost they said she had 2300 rollover minutes on her phone to use. Now that is one conservative little girl, saving her minutes, only wanting to call me and talk for hours (of course I got myself a bluetooth earpiece so I could shop or clean the house the whole time talking with my granddaughter who lived almost an hour away from me. I vote that Fireflys are the most ingenious stay in contact with little phone for kids to enjoy having and using because it is all preset by the parent or purchaser of the phone, in this case her grandmother. Also note that I was dealing with a vendictive, jealous ex-daughter in law who simply threw that phone away knowing I was making the monthly payments on it. I'm getting her another one and she won't take it to her moms's because she lives with the Daddy now. Grandparenting is supposed to be fun, not! this difficult. Thanks for listening. by Loving Melly"

"Does anyone have any thoughts about a cell phone's place in a distant co-parenting situation? My daughter is almost 6 and as visitaion stands right now, I am only allowed to call her twice a week for a couple of minutes at a time. I only spend a few days a month with her and live almost 500 miles away from her. Her mom says that if I provide our daughter with a cell phone, she will not monitor it and therefoer our daughter will be allowed to talk to me whenever she wants to. I worry about simple things like, will she remember to charge it? lose it? avoid having it confiscated at school? And, of course I'm not confident that her mom wouldn't interfere with this form of communication as well. Any thoughts on this subject would be helpful."

"I have an 8 yr old son that has had his phone since the beginning of this school year. He has been very responsible and it has helped a great deal with the hustle and bustle of after school activities and which family member is picking him up where. Before, we would all be running around like chickens with our head cut off. He has not used more than 150 minutes in any month. I did not get him a pay as you go, I added him to my line, I did however get him unlimited text msg as I find that he even texts me more than he calls. I have the security feature that only I can add on numbers with my pin and if the number is not already in the contact list, he cannot call it. Works good if ever he looses it, they can't dial anybody but us!"
02/27/2008:
"I think children under 13 dont really need to have a cellphone; just a pocket full of change! My son is 13 and I have bought him a phone and I only give it to him when he will be going somewhere and need to contact me, or I will need to be able to get a hold of him immediately. It is good security, but most of the schools dont allow kids to have phones in school. The other thing is that kids that dont work, dont know the value of money and arent responsible enough to know that cellphones arent just for style or a toy. My son has a 200 min a month plan. That is all he needs as a pre teen....but....9 days after I gave him the new phone, he had used all of the minutes up surfing the net and making uneccessary calls from HOME, even though we have a phone in the house. We give kids too many uneccessary privileges. When he can get a job then he can get a real cellphone."
02/22/2008:
"im 14 an even though my family IS financially stable they still wont get me a cell phone what should i do... what can i say to convince them to get me a cell phone???"
02/21/2008:
"I think a 10yr old should have a cellphone because what iF they miss the bus and they can't get back in the school to call on the school phone. Also my daughters friends come over from cheerleading every tuesday and thursday and they have some very exspencive phones. Such as the envy and the chocolate.Oh and the juke. ALOT of the times they sit in a circle texting eachother and my daughter dosesn't get to.Also which I'm orta of thinking I'm going to get them one because every day the teachers in my daughters school hold the cell phones all day and at dissmissal they give them back. But I'm not saying you should just get your cild a cell phone because her friends have one. I think she/he should have one just in cas something was to happen. Also I'm going to tell the truth I'm 14 and we had an early dissmissal and I missed my bus and the school oor was locked. But luckily the principal was just pulling out,so she brought me home.So thats my story why a 0yr old should have a cell! phone. Oh and I was 9 1/2 when this happened."
02/19/2008:
"i dont think kids younger than 12 need a phone. i'm 13 and still dont have a phone, even though i would feel a lot safer with one. children younger than 10 shouldn't really be left alone, and should probably be with an adult most times, and if not they can borrow a parent's phone but don't need their own. it also depends on the responsibility of the child."
02/19/2008:
"to 11/20/07, you are too young for a phone! your dad is right, and it shows him you are immature by going 'dad, my friend got a phone when she was 7' also, the swearing shows me you are not ready for a phone(even though ALL 10 year olds are not). maybe if you stop whining about it and act more mature and wait a few years, your time will come to have a cell phone, but for now stop acting like a spoiled brat."
01/29/2008:
"I am 13 years old. I am really ready to have my own cell phone. Not just becuase ALL my other friends have one, but becuase I need a responsabilty. When I am an adult I will think in a Adult mind. I will think teens need a cell for driving, contacting parents, etc. When I have my own children I think 13 is a good age to give them a cell phone. Maybe 12. I am ready for one, but my parents still say wen get my divers lisecense they will give me one. I am pretty sad, but I guess I will have to respect their decision and wait."

"im getting mad im gonna turn 10 in a few days and my moms cool about it but my dad thinks ill have a huge bill all the people i would call would be 911 my mom and dad and a few friends i mean my dad has a 200$ phone bill cmon thats fricken bull crap i dont need an expensive phone just a nice one ive ahd my eye on the sanyo katana from kajeet i mean my friend is only 9 and shes had a phone since she was 7and this kid i know whos a friend of my brother has had a phone since he was in 1st grade i deserve one but my dad thinks im irisponsible because i call my mom on his because he wont get me a frigen phone! i deserve one ive been good lately i mean im turning ten and my mom is always at work really late so i get worried that she might of gotten hurt or something but a phone is all ive asked for my birthday for months i have one friend that said he might get me one but i really hope he gets me one."
11/7/2007:
"I got my first phone when I was about eleven. It was a tracfone. I, and my parents, still use tracfone becouse it is so much cheaper than a monthly plan. Parents shoulddnt let there kids have cell phones until they pay for the phone and the service all by themselves. My phone is a moterola from tracfone. It has web acsess and text messaging."
11/2/2007:
"I am a 13 year old and i have had a cellphone since I was nine. Since then i have and 5 phones either broken, stolen,or turnd off!!! Now I have a monthly plan and text-messaging. My mom paid for half and I paid you have with money I earned babysitting.I have a LG Strawberry Chocolate Phone. Teh reason i got my first phone is because i wanted one but layer i learnd the value of it!! In school Iwas cornered by bullies and I could go anywhere. I called my mom and She helped! when I have children they will have a phone when they are 8 years old. That is what I believe!!!!"
10/11/2007:
"hey im a 14 year old and i dont have a cell phone! i am a freshman and i need a cell phone for shool reasons...if i have practice in JROTC that day or to let them know that im gonna be late...what do you think?"
09/27/2007:
"My son is now 9 years old. He has had a pay as you go cellphone since he was 7 years old. He has been VERY responsibile with it. This works because the mintues last for 90 days and they also carry over once you add more within the timeframe. Sometimes when my cellphone is out of range, his is not. If we are running late to pick him up for practice or if practice ends early he can contact us. If he needs clarification, forgets somethings or just need us for whatever reason, he has ACCESS. That makes me feel comfortable. So, it has been a win-win situation for everyone. I believe a pay as you go plan works best for this age group. "
09/24/2007:
"i am 11. my first phone was a pre paid motorola phone 20$ a month. Then later i got a boost mobile not pre paid only because of my grades and that i was traveling alone on public city buses.on my birthday i will get a sidekick not to spoil even though iam but to keep up with me."
09/24/2007:
"i think the boost mobile pre paid is nice"
09/4/2007:
"MY SON IS 12YRS OLD & HAS HAD A CELL PHONE SINCE 9YRS DUE TO THE FACT THAT HE & HIS BROTHERS ALL GO TO DIFFERENT SCHOOLS I BELIEVE THAT CHILDREN SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO HAVE THERE CELL PHONES WITH THEM FOR EMERGENCY REASONS BUT OFF DURING SCHOOL HOURS. & FOR SAFETY AS WELL. "
08/27/2007:
"I got a cell phone when I turned 9 because at the time, I was doing alot of extracurricular activities at a time when I had alot of babysitters as well. I saw my parents for breakfast and dinner, and on the weekends. I didn't have any numbers except my mom and dad's cell phones. My parents used it as a way to check in on me and if I was playing outside around the neighborhood, then they could contact me and vice-versa. After my schedule slowed down, I didn't really need the phone anymore, So we got rid of it. Now I'm 14, and I got a cell phone when I started high school because I would be taking public transit in a not-so-safe part of the city. We got a plan that would allow me to talk to my mom whenever I want free of charge. I talk to her all the time anyway, so it was I really good plan. Except I don't have any caller ID, so that really sucks. But I'm happy. I used to have a fancy phone that came with my plan, but it got stolen and trashed, so now I use my mom's old cell! , which is actually pretty great, because i'm confident enough to take my hideously uncool phone in stride. lol. I'm unique! Also, I'm not tempted to use any fancy gadgets that cost money because it doesn't even have a camera! "
